Popular Questions

Frequently asked questions

Ultimately you are the owner of your property and will make the final decisions. Our goal at Hanai Brothers Restoration is to make sure you have all the knowledge and understanding to make an informed decision. Below you will find some of the frequently asked questions we get in this industry.

Every job is different. For most residential projects we use the Xactimate platform to build our estimates. This is a computer-based application that has a set price list sent out every month. The estimate is line-itemized for every step of the process. Ex: “25 linear feet of baseboard removed.” This is the same software nearly all insurance companies use, and they can compare our estimate to theirs apples for apples.

At Hānai Brothers Restoration we strive to provide you with top-quality work. Our ownership and staff have been in the industry for decades. This allows us to only hire qualified staff and use only the best subcontractors.

Absolutely, a majority of our work is insurance claims. We have the experience to be able to guide you through your claim and deal with your insurance adjuster directly.

Mold needs two things to survive; moisture and a food source. Mold likes to use the paper backing of drywall as a food source. Mold also likes to grow in areas without much airflow. If mold growth is suspected with no visible signs we recommend contacting an Industrial Hygienist for mold testing. We work with some of the best IH’s in the state and can refer you to them.

In this industry, we use all kinds of tools and equipment to be able to get the job done properly. Here are a few with a quick synopsis of each.

Thermal imaging camera: we use this in water damage to find temperature differentials in building materials. Due to evaporation moisture shows up cooler on the thermal scan.

Moisture meter: We have a wide variety of these. The most common one has two different settings; non-penetrating and penetrating. This helps our staff confirm the moisture findings from the thermal imaging camera.

Thermohygrometer: This has a wide range of uses in the restoration industry. But, simply stated it is used to determine temperature and humidity in a given space.

Drying fans: these are used in many different applications for water restoration. Typically they are used to create a vortex of air movement in a given drying chamber. This allows the moisture to be removed from the building material and put into the atmosphere.

Dehumidifier: Once the drying fans do their job. The dehumidifier “grabs” the moisture from the air and pumps it out into a drain.

HEPA air scrubber: this piece of equipment is used in many different restoration disciplines. It can typically be found in mold, fire and smoke remediation. It uses 3-5 stage filters including a HEPA filter to remove particulates in the air.

Ozone machine: This device converts oxygen into ozone. Ozone generators produce ozone (O3) by adding energy to oxygen molecules (O2), which causes the oxygen atoms to part ways and temporarily recombine with other oxygen molecules. This machine is used for odor control and is not safe for human occupancy. The area will need to be vacated while in use.

At Hānai Brothers Restoration we strive to keep everything as honest as possible. Having us do mold clearance testing would be like the teacher letting you grade your own exam.

In this industry, we abide by IICRC guidelines. Once water damage occurs the timer starts on how long you’re capable of just drying the area in place before the risk of microbial growth starts. Some studies show mold can start growing within 48 hours. Therefore, it’s always best to start the drying process as quickly as possible. Yes, it may inconvenience your current guests. But, if you need to cut drywall, remove flooring, etc then you will be inconveniencing several guests in the future.

Yes, this floor is marketed as waterproof to the consumer. This is regarding your everyday spills, mopping, and other daily activities. When you have a substantial water intrusion, the water finds the path of least resistance and will make its way under your flooring. Once it’s under the flooring it’s hard to pull that moisture out through the flooring. You now have moisture trapped under the floor which can lead to microbial growth. Also if you have a plywood subfloor you will need to detach the floor to dry the subfloor.

In this industry we abide by IICRC guidelines. Once a water damage occurs the timer starts on how long you’re capable of just drying the area in place before the risk of microbial growth starts. If the drywall was affected by sewage or water from the exterior (flooding) this is considered Category 3 water and the guidelines state the porous materials (drywall, insulation, etc) should be removed approximately 1 foot above where the moisture has wicked to. From here the substrate is cleaned and disinfected then dried to standard.
